Back To Basics & Backroads

The second half of our time in Colorado was the true beginning of the trip for me.  With no other visits scheduled we were ready to spend some time in the mountains.

Previously, I would try to get in at least one good hiking/camping trip per year.  I always regarded this as my time to “refresh” my head and get back to basics.  Jobs, traffic, bills, etc. had a way of keeping me busy…too busy.  Always thinking “what’s next?” “what am I forgetting?” and “what should I be doing?” After a while the constant stimuli made it difficult to really relax and think without feeling the need for distraction; and getting away and outdoors was my way of clearing all that static.

Over the years these getaways had evolved from week+ long hikes on the Appalachian Trail to overnight glamping at local campgrounds.  Needless to say I was excited to now be unemployed and able to head into the mountains for more than a long weekend.

Travel Amateurs - Backroads -101

Off the highways and away from the masses, we hit the back roads and watch the cell service fade until we’re fully lost.  The windy dirt roads leave a dust trail in the side mirrors and a grin on our faces.  Each song on the playlist seems to crescendo perfectly as we peak over hills and round bends to reveal the vistas we’ve been searching for.  A little extra throttle loosens the rear, spits gravel, and has Jenna reaching for the oh-sh!t handle.  This is our “commute” until a crooked blue line on the map and a couple lucky turns leads us to a remote mountain stream…we’re home.  A bit of our drive from CO and WY below…

If you’re wondering if we’ve found happiness so far, I can say this…Waking in beautiful landscapes, at times announced by the birds, to the crisp morning air and a glint of sunshine through the window, with a morning agenda of coffee and conversation…this alone has been worth it.  Worth the time, effort, fear, worries, and decisions that led to this brief lifestyle that cares not for responsibility and the future of our bank account, but only for our present opportunities and happiness.

Love this! Every picture on your trip is just incredible. Your video reminds me of a road trip I took with a friend in college; we stopped at Rocky Mountain National Park and drove through the mountains; it was like, “Oh hey, look! If I take my eyes off the road for a split second, we’ll be falling thousands of feet off this cliff!” lol. Glad you’re driving safely and having an amazing time. Love and miss you both!

Aww thank you Elainna! Josh was slightly obsessed with driving that road (and many others). He’s doing a great job so far but I still haven’t had the chance…maybe he’s hogging all the good ones for himself. 😉 Hope you and Jack are doing great! We miss you guys!

Living on edge…showers in the wilderness, driving on the edge of the cliff. Almost running Jenna over while video taping you, coming face to face with the wild animals, driving with nowhere to particular place to go……….these are the things this trip was designed to be. You guys look like you are really having the time of your lives. Enjoy and please be safe.

    Love ya
